Shri Krishna Himself answers this question in the Gita -

“The harder a devotee tries to please Shri Krishna, the more Shri Krishna reciprocates that feeling, making the devotee happier and happier. This competition between Shri Krishna and the devotee continues until eternity.”
Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj says, “In the realm of Hari and Guru, if you understand just this one thing, this question will be gone from your mind once and for all. The straightforward answer to this question is that Hari and Guru love us, and HAVE to love us to the same extent as our love for them. The extent of their love is an exact measure.”

Still, in order to resolve this doubt, it is important for all aspiring devotees to understand that there are two kinds of God-realized saints:
1. Nitya Siddh - eternally God realized and
2. Sadhan Siddh - became God-realized one day
The saints who were never afflicted by Maya, have always been free from Maya, and are associates and intimate servants of God who are engrossed in serving Him continuously are Nitya Siddh Mahapurush. For example, Lalita, Vishakha and the other Ashta Mahasakhis.
The saints who were once bound by Maya, but over time, by the grace of a saint, attained the divine vision and bliss of God are called Sadhan Siddh Mahapurush. For instance, if we attain the vision of God through sadhana and the grace of a saint, we will fall under the category of Sadhan Siddh Mahapurush.

Based on this distinction, the devotion (Bhakti) of these saints is also of two kinds - Ragatmika and Raganuga
Nitya Siddh Mahapurush are very rare to be found, and manifestations of Ragatmika Bhakti can be seen in them. By following the instructions of these saints, one develops a natural love for Shri Radha Krishna. This bhakti has no trace of fear of the rules and regulations of the scriptures. This kind of devotion is called Raganuga Bhakti. So Raganuga means devotion which is done by following a saint who does Ragatmika Bhakti.
Shri Krishna descended 5000 years ago along with the Divine Vrindavan in India. At that time, all the residents of Braj were Ragatmika devotees who descended along with Shri Krishna from Golok.

“The devotion which is evident and naturally present in the residents of Braj, is called Ragatmika Bhakti. The devotion which is attained by following Ragatmika Bhakti is called Raganuga Bhakti.” Ragatmika Bhakti is the foundation of Raganuga Bhakti. Hence, in order to understand Raganuga Bhakti, it is imperative to understand Ragatmika Bhakti.

“When one is naturally absorbed in beloved Shri Krishna and yet the yearning for him continuously increases, such unalloyed love is called Ragatmika Bhakti”.
Having a very deep longing for beloved Shri Krishna is a characteristic trait of raag, and becoming extremely passionate towards the beloved is a secondary trait of this form of bhakti. |

|
aba khudā kī ibādata kī ādata gaī, hama hī tuma ho gae, tuma hī hama ho gae

“Now I am out of the habit of worshiping God” because I have become so raptly engrossed in Him that I have reached the state of “I have become you, and you have become I”. Devotion which has such sentiments is called Ragatmika Bhakti. An unquenchable desire for serving Shri Krishna is the life-force of Ragatmika Bhakti. Such thirst is always manifested in the Gopas and Gopis of Braj who are Nitya-siddh associates of God.
By following the associates of Braj, when an overwhelming desire to serve Shri Krishna arises in a jeev, it is called Raganuga. In other words, following the footsteps of the associates of Braj, upholding their extremely selfless attitude of service as the ideal to follow, is the characteristic of Raganuga Bhakti. Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj has given a short introduction to this in Radha Govind Geet -

rāgānugā bhakti goviṃda rādhe । ānugatyamayī hī hotī hai batā de ॥ rā. go. gī. 5865

“Raganuga Bhakti follows the philosophy of Ragatmika Bhakti”.
rāgātmikā bhakti goviṃda rādhe । svātaṃtryamayī hī hotī hai batā de ॥ rā. go. gī. 5866
|
“Ragatmika Bhakti is always free”. Here free means that it is not governed by any rules and regulations of karm, gyan, yog, vedas or scriptures.
rāgātmikā vāre goviṃda rādhe । svarūpa śakti ke niyantā batā de ॥ rā. go. gī. 5868
|

rāgātmikā bhakti goviṃda rādhe। jīva te hai aprāpya batā de॥ rā. go. gī. 5869
|
“Ragatmika Bhakti can never be attained by a jeev”.
A devotee who practices Raganuga Bhakti is not governed by the scriptures. The foundations of this devotion are a deep thirst, yearning and incessant eagerness to serve Radha Krishna. However, this does not mean that we completely ignore the scriptures. In this, the role of scriptures is to strengthen the constant feeling of “How and by what conduct will my Raganuga Bhakti be strengthened”. Continuously increasing the eagerness to serve the Lord by following the instructions of the scriptures and Guru in a disciplined manner is very important in Raganuga Bhakti. |
Always remember, the Gopas, Nand baba, Yashoda, Gopis etc are a part of the intimate power of Shri Krishna called ‘Swaroop Shakti’. You should follow them, but not mimic their physical actions. In other words, the associates of Braj are imbued with soft, selfless feelings of serving Shri Krishna. Their only desire is to make Shri Krishna happy. You should understand these feelings and adhere to this underlying philosophy of selfless love. However, you should not consider yourself as a Gopi and mimic their actions. Doing so will not only be inappropriate, but also considered a transgression.
Other than Nand-Yashoda, Subal, Madhumangal and other sakhas, Shri Radha Rani, Lalita and other sakhis, Ragatmika Bhakti cannot be attained by anyone. Hence serving in accordance with the sentiments of the devotees of the category of Ragatmika Bhakti is Raganuga Bhakti.
The rights of a jeev are limited only till this area. If an attendant of a queen serves her, she will be praiseworthy. However if the same attendant begins imitating the actions of the queen, she will be ridiculed and would also be punished.
Some people are so ignorant that they ask me if they can have the feelings of Madhurya Bhav towards Shri Radha. Don’t you realize that she is our Divine mother ? We have to only adopt the sentiments of extreme levels of selflessness of these associates of Braj and only develop the feelings of rendering service.

We are eternal servants of Shri Radha Krishna. They are causelessly merciful by nature. My will lies in serving them how-so-ever They want to be served. All of Their actions are delightful for me. May my sole desire always be Their happiness. Such sentiments are how one adheres to ideals of Ragatmika Bhakti. This is what aspiring devotees of Raganuga Bhakti should learn and implement in their lives.
|
sā kāmarūpā sambandharūpā ceti bhavedvidhā ॥

“Ragatmika Bhakti is of two kinds - Kama rupa (amorous) and Sambandh rupa (relational)”. In sambandh rupa, the dignity of the relationship takes an upper hand. Their seva depends on their relationship with Shri Krishna. The devotee can neither serve in a manner which goes beyond the dignity of the relationship nor does he desire such a seva. Come, let us understand both of these in detail.
The love of Gopis is only filled with natural attachment in which there are no limitations of a relationship.
|
rāgabandhena kenāpi taṃ bhajanto brajantayamī ।
aṃghripadmasudhā prema rūpāstasya priyāḥ janāḥ ॥ bha.ra.siṃ 281
|
“Shri Krishna’s most beloved Gopis worship Shri Krishna with an indescribable affection for His divine lotus feet. They constantly chant His glories and relish the nectar of love for His lotus feet.”
|
sā kāmārūpā sambhogatṛṣṇā yā nayati svatām।
yadasyāṃ kṛṣṇasaukhyārthameva kevamudyamaḥ ॥ bha.ra.siṃ 283
|
The devotion that gives a divine form to the amorous divine sentiments of the Gopis is called Kama Rupa Bhakti (Amorous Divine Love). This is because here, efforts are made solely for the happiness of Shri Krishna. In other words, the Gopis do not have any desire of their own. Even the amorous yearning depends on Shri Krishna’s desire and His happiness. The Gopis experience the infinite amount of divine bliss in whatever he does willingly, whatever he says or gives on his own accord. The Gopis never desire anything for themselves. In this there is a deep yearning for making Shri Krishna happy in all possible ways. They don’t even hesitate to offer their bodies for serving Shri Krishna.
mādhurya bhāva kī to goviṃda rādhe । kṛṣṇa bhakti kāmānugā hai batā de ॥
- rā. go. Gī.5652 |
“Worshiping Shri Krishna with Madhurya Bhav is Kama Rupa Bhakti”. Hence the word kama originates from the selfless love of Gopis. In the modern day the same word is used to describe selfish material love.
premaiva goparāmāṇāṃ kāma ityagamatprathām। bha.ra.siṃ 285
|
This supreme love is such that it gives a divine form to the Gopi’s amorous desires, who yearns for Shri Krishna’s service and His happiness alone. There is absolutely no place for the sensual desires in this.
A question also arises as to whether there was no desire to embrace or kiss Shri Krishna at all? However, one should understand that kissing someone is just an expression of one’s love. For example a father hugs and kisses his little daughter. Small children also hug and kiss their parents. However in this divine love, there is not even a trace of worldly sensual desires. These actions cannot be called bestial sense gratification. In the same manner, the Gopis embraced Shri Krishna for His happiness, because in His happiness alone lies their utmost happiness. This zenith of selfless love in which there is no desire of self happiness gives them an amazing inexplicable nectarine bliss. Hence,
ityuddhavādayo'pyetaṃ vāñchati bhagavatpriyāḥ ॥ bha.ra.siṃ 286
|
“Shri Krishna’s dearest friend Uddhav and others who sought liberation from Maya crave to attain Kama Rupa Bhakti, but nevertheless cannot attain it.”
So, Uddhav Ji says,
So, Uddhav Ji says,
|
etāḥ paraṃ tanubhṛto bhuvi gopavadhvo govinda eva nikhilātmani rūढ़bhāvā: ।
vāṃchanti yadbhavabhiyo munayo vayaṃ ca, kiṃ brahmajanmabhirananta-kathārasasya ॥ bhāgavata 10.47.58
|
“It is a blessing that these Gopis, who always remain in 'Mahabhav', the heightened state of divine love for Shri Krishna, take a human form and descend on earth. Even the great souls who wish to be liberated, ascetics and others yearn to attain this state. Attainment of human form is a great blessing only for the Gopis, who are ever engrossed in the highest state of love - Roorh Bhav. Even the great sages, sears and devotees like me as well, wish to attain the state of the Gopis. But we could not. If one cannot be intoxicated by the bliss of narratives of Leelas of Shri Krishna like the Gopis, then what is the use of even taking birth as Lord Brahma repeatedly for many Kalpas ?”
Hence, Shri Krishna tells the Gopis,
Hence, Shri Krishna tells the Gopis,
na pāraye ’haṁ niravadya-saṁyujāṁ sva-sādhu-kṛtyaṁ vibudhāyuṣāpi vaḥ ।
yā mā bhajan durjara geha śrṛṃkhalāḥ saṃvṛścya tad vaḥ pratiyātu sādhunā ॥ |
“I am not able to repay My debt for your pristine service, even within a lifetime of Brahmā. Your connection with Me is beyond reproach. You have worshiped Me, cutting off all domestic, vaidik and scriptural ties, which are difficult to break. Therefore please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation.” Following the Gopis and continuously feeding the thoughts of serving Shri Krishna selflessly is Kama Rupa Raganuga Bhakti.

|
“In Sambandh Rupa Bhakti (Divine Relation), there is an identification of oneself as being a father, mother, friend and other such relations. Similar to the associates of Kama Rupa Bhakti, these devotees also have pure sentiments of love. Just as the Gopis are an exemplary representation of Kama Rupa Bhakti, the Nitya Siddh saints such as Yashoda are an exemplary representation of Sambandh Rupa Bhakti.”
dāsya sakhya vātsalya goviṃda rādhe । sambaṃdhānugā hai bhakti batā de ॥ - rā.go.gī 5651
|
It is clear from the above description that a jeev can never reach the level of Lalita, Vishakha etc. Hence it is naive to aim to attain their level of Divine love. Also, the divine love that we can attain by the grace of the Ashta Mahasakhis and the saints who follow them is itself infinite and indescribable. What to say of Shri Radha Krishna, if we can get the service of these saints, that in itself can fade away an infinite amount of Brahmanand, the bliss of the impersonal form of God.
To summarize, we should forget the thought about how much love we will get from Them, and focus on gradually increasing our yearning to be more and more selfless. Only by doing this can we attain that incomparable, immeasurable, supreme divine bliss of love.

We are presently doing Raganuga Bhakti. It can only be done under the guidance of someone with Ragatmika Bhakti or those who have attained Bhakti under the guidance of Saints who follow Ragatmika Bhakti. That is why the term "Dasanudas" is used; which means das of das (servant of a servant). Those blessed ones who understand this will one day get to taste this unparalleled nectar.

There was a devotee living with his wife and a young son. His parents also used to live with him.
His son had mid-year exams during annual Sharad Poornima Sadhana, so he came alone to attend half the Sadhana in Mangarh. After a few days, he received a telegram from his wife saying his son was extremely ill hence he should come back soon. He approached Maharaj Ji to seek permission to go and Maharaj ji denied. Next day again he approached Maharaj Ji and this time Maharaj Ji gave permission and said, “Your wife is coming. So tell her to bring the special (maghai) paan (betel leaf for chewing) for me”. Just like most of us, the devotee did not comprehend the statement and definitely did not like the comment. Anyway he sent a telegram to his wife and left Mangarh. |
When he reached home, only his old parents were at home. He asked the whereabouts of his wife and son. His parents told him that his wife has gone to Mangarh to attend Sadhana and son is playing in the park. He was confused since he expected to see his son lying in the bed about to die. Seeing his confused state, his parents told him since your son suddenly got perfectly well yesterday afternoon, so your wife bought paan for Maharaj Ji and left this morning.
Now he realized it was his misconception that he was looking after his family. Based on the level of surrender Guru always takes care of the responsibilities of His surrendered souls. That’s why Maharaj Ji wanted him to do more Sadhana instead of being attached to the family.

Guru is always right. Even when His actions don't make sense. His advice is just the thing we need for our welfare.
There are many imposters, we find one scandal after another about phony saints everyday in the newspapers. There are hardly any bonafide saints. So do your due diligence to find the genuine saint. To find the characteristics mentioned in the Vedas about those saints please read the article Saint or Imposter. Then, do your due diligence to find a genuine saint. Finally, stop using your intellect and follow Him. He will lead you to God. Many have already followed this and reached God. You too can!

Our beloved Shri Maharaj Ji advises us to worship both Hari and Guru simultaneously. Guru is Hari in a human form. But since Guru is in human form sometimes we tend to find faults due to our material intellect Shri Maharaj Ji is the Master Reconciler (samnvaya-vaadi) Jagadguru. So he advises us to worship both Hari and Guru. If ever the soul starts finding faults with Guru, then God's Leelas will help the person focus back on divinity.
The crown of vigorously propagating Shri Radha’s name worldwide goes to Shri Maharaj Ji. On Shri Maharaj Ji’s 100 birth anniversary (centenary), it feels like the right time to narrate the impact of Shri Radha’s descension. So here is how Radha Rani's descension changes the course of events as opposed to when only Shri Krishna descends.
Shri Krishna descends in every dwapar. But Radha Rani descends only once in a kalp. Which means, in a span of 4.32 billion years Shri Krisha descends 993 times without Shri Radha. Every time he descends, he kills demons, fights the Mahabharat war etc. These are all majestic (aishwarya) leelas. But Radha Rani is the epitome of madhurya. So when she descends, then even aishwarya leelas become sweet (madhurya) leelas, due to her influence.

After Krishna had defeated the demon Arishtasura, the celestial sage Narada informed Kamsa that Krishna was very much alive and would kill him. Fuming with rage, Kamsa summoned the demon Keshi and commanded him to kill the lad. Keshi assumed the form of a dreadful horse and started terrorizing the inhabitants of Nandgaon. Krishna understood that the demon was challenging him to a fight. So, He confronted the horse. On seeing the young lad, the horse charged at Him. Krishna, however, caught one of the horse’s legs and threw it a hundred yards away. When Keshi regained consciousness, he charged at Krishna with his mouth open. The Lord pushed His left arm into the horse’s mouth, making its teeth fall out. Then, He inflated His arm, and that killed the demon. That was the end of Keshi.

Moral:
Shri Krishna descended with Shri Radha almost 5000 years ago. Though Shri Krishna is Bhagawan i.e. He has full blown majesty. Yet when He descends with Shri Radha then even the aishwarya (majesty) leelas turn into madhurya (sweetness). One would think that He was upset when killing a demon, but read the leela. He just increased his size and a demon died. Due to Radha Rani’s powerful presence He does these leelas also with a smile. Unlike other times, there is no wrath in them. Radha Rani makes these aishwarya leelas also so lovable.
